From Surviving to Thriving- My journey Towards Mental Wellness

With tips for you!

As a student and part time worker, I myself have found struggles in balancing my mental wellness, school and my job. I am sure there are many of you out there with the same struggles. However, I am here to tell you that I have overcome the majority of my struggles. I found the balance so many look for when it comes to needing to prioritize your mental wellbeing but also have duties that need fulfilled. Either in school, work, or as for me and many others, both.

The one thing I myself and many others have struggled with is finding time to balance everything at once. When you're coming up on a busy week it is easy to shut down and find yourself in a bad mental head space. I know for me personally, I struggled with that a lot. It seemed that my busy weeks were the ones I struggled with my mental wellbeing the most. I am here to offer tips that have worked for me in multitasking and prioritizing myself, my school and my job.

The one thing that helped me most was allowing myself plenty of time for everything. I stopped waiting till the last minute to accomplish all of my duties. When waiting forever to complete an assignment or a task for a job, I found myself in more of a mental slump then when I would just sacrifice and do it. But here's the thing I learned, time doesn't need to be sacrificed! When you allow yourself plenty of time to focus on your mental wellbeing, assignments and work tasks, nothing needs to be sacrificed.

  • Give yourself a mental break. Enjoy a show, a movie, play a game, do whatever brings you relaxation.
  • Once you have enjoyed your time doing something you want, know it's time for your duties. Block of a couple hours of your time to complete these duties.
  • Once that time frame is up, go back to doing something that isn't stressful or time consuming.
  • Continue to allow yourself to do this. Before you know it, you have now accomplished balance. You have balanced your mental wellbeing by allowing time for fun, relaxing activities while blocking off crucial hours of the day to complete your duties.
You shouldn't live with your day-to-day duties being miserable. Changing your mindset to "I get to do these things" VS "I have to do these things" is such a subtle, yet huge change. The way you interrupt the things you have to do will make the worlds a difference in completing them.

I know this can be easier said than done for those who struggle with mental illnesses outside of simple stress and anxiety that school or work brings them. For me, I am somebody who struggles with anxiety outside of my duties. The simplest of things bring me anxiety, and for individuals like me, letting workloads pile on top of each other isn't the solution. Telling yourself "Not doing this assignment right now is making me feel better" is not the truth. More than likely you just haven't given yourself or your headspace enough time for both. Bringing joy back into your life with the duties you must fulfil is attainable.

Allow yourself to enjoy your life outside of school and work, procrastinating is not a fix. Putting your duties to the side is NOT making you feel better. It is all about balance. Find a balance that works for you. Stop living in day-to-day misery. Make your life worth living.
